Painting Tile in the Bathroom with Chalk Paint®

The Purple Painted Lady® (please LIKE my Facebook page by clicking on my business name to the left)  loves hearing from all of you on the projects you complete after we coach you through with instructions.

Here is a great “HOW TO” by Kim Gray:

And just a quick disclaimer….There is significant prep (cleaning and rinsing) prior to this type of application!  ALWAYS – always do a fresh water rinse after using cleaning agents on the tile when cleaning PRIOR to painting.  Bathrooms get hairspray, body moisturizer, toothpaste, little boy messes, make up, etc.  CLEAN that floor and rinse it well before painting! (rant over)  Also- this is NOT intended for anywhere IN the shower area.

The Purple Painted Lady Kim Gray Before After Chalk Paint annie Sloan

Dear Trish,
I spoke with you a few times regarding painting my bathroom tile floor with Annie Sloan Chalk paint®. The results were gorgeous and I’m so happy with the look of the bathroom. In this email I will give you a short description of what I did and also some before and after photos. Your help at the store and on the phone was fantastic. Can’t wait to paint my couch at my cottage (among other things) this summer. This is the before photo but I had already stripped the wallpaper and primed the cabinets (sometimes it’s so bad you just can’t stop and take a picture) trim and doors (were dark peach)

The Purple Painted Lady Kim Gray Tile Floor Chalk Paint BEFORE 1

Inside the tub (peach) and tile surround was peach and peach/brown stripe.

We wanted to update the bathroom without the cost of gutting the entire room. What I did was
1. Strip wallpaper, skim coat some areas, prime and paint walls
2. Prime and paint cabinets, doors and trim with oil paint as oil was used previously
3. Had the tub and tile surround professionally sprayed white
4. I went over the counter top with a product called Henry Feather finish with Ardex technology. This yields a surface of concrete over the counter. Very inexpensive way to update one ugly counter top
5. Purchased 2 new sinks
6. Initially I was not going to paint the floor and just leave it peach.  But after talking with Trish at The Purple Painted Lady®, I changed my mind and decided to give Annie Sloan chalk paint® a chance. SOO glad I did. I mixed the paint using 2 parts Pure White to 1 part French Linen.

Pure White:

Pure White Sample Board The purple Painted Lady Annie Sloan

French Linen:

French Linen with both Clear and Dark Wax Sample Board

Unmixed, the French linen was almost a perfect match to the color of my cement counter top. A bit of contrast was needed so I mixed it with the pure white.

Here is an example of French Linen mixed with Old White:

PREP:

Before painting I repaired all gouges in the tile and missing grout with Henry’s feather finish, sanded the floor and base tile with 100 grit paper, vacuumed the dust, cleaned the floor with mineral spirits using a green scrubber and wiped the floor down 2x with clear water. (always do a fresh water rinse after using a cleaner)

The Purple Painted Lady Mineral spirits

ANOTHER GREAT OPTION to use for cleaning tile prior to painting is Krud Kutter.  WE STRONGLY recommend that after using Krud Kutter  that you follow up with a fresh rag and clean water.  Wipe the whole piece down to remove any residual cleaner.  Chalk Paint does not like to be applied on a surface where cleaner has been left behind.

(after cleaning the tile) ……..I let all of this dry overnight to make sure the floor was completely dry. I also taped around the top of the tile, tub and toilet. Although I’m an experienced painter and typically do not tape, it was an essential step this time.

APPLICATION OF CHALK PAINT®:

In total, I applied 3 coats of paint (1 and 2 were thinned with 25% water) and 2 coats of Annie Sloan’s Lacquer (first was thinned with 10% water- FOLLOW THE LACQUER INSTRUCTIONS YOU GET FROM The Purple Painted Lady).

Coat 1 of paint was left to dry for 24 hours before painting coat 2.  And use that blue Annie Sloan brush to apply!

LACQUER TIPS: (a MUST read)

Working with any Lacquer, is not like working with paint.  There are specific steps you must follow.  Read this post HERE to learn about Lacquer BEFORE using it. (<==Make sure to read this post!)

After coat 2 (of the Lacquer), I had issues with paint not adhering to parts of the floor (pictures below the finished floor pic).  The reason was because of the overspray chemicals from the bathtub surround:

The Purple Painted Lady Kim Gray Tile Floor Chalk Paint AFTER paint did not adhere overspray

I used both foam roller and a brush for the painting and lacquer. The brush was used on the base tile while the roller was used on the flat floor.  The photo above shows where I sanded the tile (50 grit paper using an electric sander) and 1/2 of the area I had started to repaint.

I believe the paint didn’t stick due to 2 things.

1. The base title was very slippery. Even with sanding it still had a sheen.
2. Blow back from the tub being sprayed. Although everything was covered, I’m sure there were petroleum substances on the floor.

Things I wish I had done
1. Used 50 grit paper on the entire base tile
2. used the power sander on all the base tile
3. Maybe used a tile primer on the base tile
4. Used a foam brush to paint the grout lines before putting a coat on the entire floor. The roller didn’t really push the paint into the grout lines.

Here is a picture of the finished bathroom. Colors are a bit hard to discern. I had to take the photos at night as the bright sunlight washed out all the pictures.

Please know that I am very happy with the final results!! This paint was awesome. I would however recommend that this type of project NOT be anyone’s first with Annie Sloan’s paint.   Although my results were fantastic having some experience would have made this job easier on my nerves!

Dry Brushing Tips with Chalk Paint®

Dry Brushing is a technique where you off load most of the paint from your paint brush so there is minimal left.  So minimal, that after you apply the paint- it is almost dry already.  You are applying the paint very sparingly.  Often, I use a dry brush technique to achieve a specific look.

When I say “off load” basically it means you are wiping a lot of the paint off your brush…or taking your brush and painting on another surface with the goal to remove as much paint as possible off your bristles.

Here is an example of dry brushing Old White Chalk Paint® over a wood cabinet.

If you have come into our Macedon, NY location on a weekend, you have probably met Courtney.  She is part of the team at THE PURPLE PAINTED LADY™ and is super talented!  (Courtney is on the left in the photo below)

And if you have needed help with a project, she is extremely knowledgeable about the products we sell!  Also in the photo on the right, is Britni.  Britni is also part of our team and is also extremely helpful, caCourtney Britni Patio Umbrella The Purple Painted ladyring and product savvy!  I think of these two as “peas and carrots” as when you see one of them, the other is not far behind!  Sometimes I call them “Fric & Frac.”  They often work together and like to think of themselves as “The Purple Painted Lady Dream Team.”

Well, on December 26th, 2015, Courtney did a dry brush demo on an old cabinet at our Macedon store using Old White Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

The Purple Painted Lady Old White Open Lid Quart Chalk Paint

Courtney was experimenting with this technique for the first time and I asked her to do a write up regarding some of the most important lessons she learned as to help others who are interested in trying this.

But first, here is the piece she completed with Britni modeling next to it.

Dry Brushing The Purple Painted Lady Old White Chalk Paint Annie Sloan

Courtney’s “How to Dry Brush” Tips:

1.) Use a brush with a flat edge or bristles cut in a straight line versus a round, domed top brush. The Purple Painted Lady Annie LARGE FLAT PAINT BRUSH

2. Have enough paint on your brush but not enough to paint a full solid line.

3.) Hold your brush more at an angle to get a better drag.

4.) Starting at the edge is good, but that will also be the area that receives the most paint…so, make sure to alternate the sides you start from! (For example- when doing the top of a cabinet or dresser- brush once starting from the left side, then next starting from the right side.)

5.) Work in linear sections so that your strokes look fluid.Dry Brush Technique Chalk Paint Courtney The purle Painted Lady 4

6.) It’s a good idea to have a damp cloth near you, that way you can blot your brush on the cloth, pick up some water and feather out the paint a bit easier.

7.) If the piece has architecture, alternate the sides you brush it from as so to have the paint laid from different directions.

8.) Paint inset panels first before painting the borders.

9.) For large surfaces, remember dry brush in the middle also to even out the appearance, versus just painting inward from the edges.

10.) Don’t be afraid to use sandpaper to soften strokes that may have been applied a little too heavy once paint is dry.

11.) Take drawers out before painting.Dry Brush The Purple Painted Lady close up

12.) Do not dip your brush into a cup of water to feather out the paint. Your brush will pick up too much water and create a wash which is a totally different look.

13.) Use a paper plate to pour some paint onto.  This is more important if using an older brush that may shed, since it is best that the stray bristles go into a plate or paper towel versus the quart of paint.

14.) Use a smaller Artisan brush to paint smaller ledges or hard to reach corners versus attempting to use a large paint brush.

15.) Dry brush WITH the grain of the wood.

Dry Brush Courtney The Purple Painted Lady Drawers

16.) As you drag the paint, lift up on the brush so it looks fluid and the stroke doesn’t stop abruptly.  Think of this as feathering out the end of the brush stroke.

17.  Lastly- always remember to take a photo of your piece “BEFORE” you start you painting project (unlike us, who forgot) and then share your photos on The Purple Painted Lady’s Facebook page HERE.

More Typography or Image Transfer FYI

I love inspirational quotes on pieces of furniture.  Especially, in a kid’s room or a front vestibule.  Making a statement seems, …cool to me.

The most recent quote I am painting is “Life Moves Pretty Fast. If you don’t stop & look around once in a while, you could miss it!”  Are you a “Ferris Bueller” fan- because if yes- you know this quote and you may want to – click here.

A couple weeks ago- I painted this “Love” dresser.  The shot below shows it almost dine.  There was still a little bit of painting left on it…..

Typography LOVE quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

When it comes to typography on painted pieces, it is very popular!

The dresser below is still in the works.  First we painted the dresser with Graphite Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.  Graphite is reminiscent of Gun Metal.  It is a soft charcoal black – which I like to compare to a dark slate color or a vintage slate chalk board in an old school room! It is made with purplish blues, browns, and it is not completely black.

Graphite is a popular color, especially when I am detailing a piece with vintage typography. I receive a lot of emails about this color. But again– I want to clearly state again though – this is NOT black.

The Purple Painted Lady Graphite Chalk Paint open lid

Once my dresser was painted and dried- I then followed the steps I have noted in another post here on my website.  So, in case you are interested in trying this yourself- check out an old post I wrote called “Typography! How does she do it?”

CLICK HERE TO READ THE POST ON STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

The main thing is that Chalk Paint® is ideal for this technique.

As you will read- I like to use a projector and push an image up on to my dresser.

Using a water color pencil in the color I plan on using to fill in the design- I copy the design onto my piece.

Typography Life Moves Fast quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

In the photo I have here- I used a white water color pencil.

I will typically take the drawers out to paint the design, and then- using sandpaper- I distress my painted letters.

This will create a super smooth finish. Note the white dust on the Graphite paint on the upper drawers from sanding over the white letters.

Do not worry about that because once I go over this with my Annie Sloan Clear Wax- the residual dust will disappear.

Stay tuned and we will post soon showing the results using Annie’s Clear Wax over this piece.

We Painted a Patio Umbrella with Chalk Paint®

Yes- we all know that Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan is some amazing, crazy paint.   It started out just in England- and then it came to North America around 2010-ish….and now it is in United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, all of Europe, etc   Social media and customers who use it, love it and post about it and that …..created this phenominal global paint revolution.

Ok, sorry- I was thinking about that and had to share my thought.  So, The Purple Painted Lady is located in western NY.  (just need to say also- that if you do not have a local stockist then …..purchase from us……we ship your on-line orders out the same day that you place them and paint sold in the USA, is made in the USA!  Kansas City, Missouri in fact!)

Here is the story of the painted umbrella: I have a friend who had a patio umbrella that structurally was in great shape.  The fabric of the umbrella was a dull unter green- and not quite going with the new “brighter spring green” cushions she loved and bought for her patio chairs.  One day- when the “Mr. Purple Painted Lady” was at their home- she told him about the umbrella.  It was Steve who suggested, “let’s paint it!”

So, at The Purple Painted Lady~  we are fortunate that a couple of the women who are part of our team – were very enthusiastic about painting this umbrella as an experiement to see how it goes and how it holds up once done and placed back outside.

Intro to Courtney (on the left) and Britni! (aren’t they beautiful!)

Courtney Britni Patio Umbrella The Purple Painted ladySeriously- I struck the lottery having these two walk into my shop to be hired a couple years back.  Granted, they didn’t come in together- because Britni referred Courtney- (thank you Britni!)  …but I can honestly share- that they are two of the most mature and grounded high schoolers (and now…college students) I have ever met!  They are both enthusiastic, disciplined in working significant hours and still maintaining top of the class grades, and I have never had to call them once for missing work or coming in late!  (well, okay- I did have to call Courtney the first week she was hired- but that was only because I did a terrible time communicating her schedule)   They are both go getter’s and are always eager to do anything and to help and with a big smile on their face. (okay- I just needed to share that because I am very grateful for them and am feeling a bit meloncholy since they are spreading their wings and leaving for college.  I am not even their mom , but I cry as I write that.  Tissue please!)

Now- on to Chalk Paint®  and focusing on this project.

MATERIALS USED:

2 quarts of Primer Red (ctually less than 2 quarts- but it was more than one!)

2 quart plastic bucket

Annie Sloan’s SMALL paint brush (ps – I love the small size.  I find that the brush gets a bit too heavy in my hand wihen the brisles are loaded with paint on the medium or large)

Spray Bottle

The hunter green umbrella is big.  It has a solid wood base and the arms that extend out – are these non-bendable metal.  The umbrella is made of some sort of water proof-ish thicker canvas-like fabric that almost looks like it has a basket weave texture to it and can be removed from the top.

The Purple Painted Lady Courtney Patio Umbrella Chalk Paint Primer Red

We did not measure the diameter when we had the umbrella, but I am guessing it is 9 feet.

The color the umbrella fabric was going to be painted was Primer Red by Annie Sloan.

Primer Red The Purple Painted Lady

This image shows Primer Red with both clear wax and (on the right) dark wax over it. (no wax was used during this project)Primer Red Sample Board

Britni and Courtney started this project by laying the umbrella fabric out onto a plastic drop coth.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process Courtney

Then they spritzed the fabric with water.  We used a spray bottle like this:

The Purple Painted Lady Spray Bottle Paint Fabric Chalk Paint

They poured some paint into a bucket and dilluted it with water.  Almost a 1:1 ratio.  Then, using Annie Sloan’s small “domed top” brush they began to paint.  Ths brush is awesome in helping to get the paint into grooves of the fabric’s texture.

The Purple Painted Lady small Annie sloan Chalk Paint brush domed top

The best way to apply the paint, is using your Annie Sloan domed top paint brush:

1. Work in sections and paint from the center, out.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process 2

2. Swirl your brush initially in circles, using the bristles to get into all of the textured grooves.

3. Immediately, after getting nice coverage with circular strokes – lay your paint smoothly in linear, straight lines going from the top center to the bottom.  Watch a video here about “laying your paint.”  Hopefully the iage below conveys linear finished strokes.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process

This project took a good three coats.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process on loading dock

Courtney and Britni painted BOTH the top of the umbrella and flipped it over and did the underside.

AMOUNT OF PAINT USED:

They used a quart and a half of paint on this project.

We left the umbrella on our loading dock for about a week to allow the paint to fully set and cure before exposing it to the night dew and rain.  It is now back at the Van Gorden’s home.  Pretty cool, huh? And it’s already been down poured on three times and all looks good!

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red after 2 close up

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red after

Now- some are you wondering- what did we top coat it in?

PROTECTIVE TOP COAT?:

I painted my exterior porch floors with Chalk Paint® without a top sealer back in 2013 and they still look great. It really does work well outside.

Most canvas umbrellas are water resistent, but will eventually start to drip a little water through their fabric if they are in a continuous down pour.

I did not want to add a variable that could change the umbrella’s basic fuctionality- since the Chalk Paint® allows the moisture to breathe or escape. If I had sealed the umbrella’s fabric on top- it would trap the moisture beneath- and then I would be concerned about mold growing when the umbrella is closed tight. I am not sure if I communicated my thoughts clearly there, but in my opinion – this would be the best path. : )

AMAZING CHALK PAINT® APPLICATIONS:

Annie Sloan created her paint for furniture and walls.  But it is so amazing, we have pushed the envelope on what we use it for many times.

Since fabrics of umbrellas vary- always do a test spot.  We can guarantee across the board that this will be a success for your umbrella or patio cushions, but many have done their boat seats and outdoor pillows.

Anne wrote that this table and chairs set was a big job, but I love the way it turned out! My client wanted something rustic, yet sophisticated so we went with kind of a faux zinc finish.

PREPPED FOR GENERAL FINISHES:
I started by removing each of the seats so they could be sanded down and prepped for staining. The chair backs were also sanded and taped off since part of the chair would be painted and part would be stained.

The table top was also completely sanded and prepped for staining. For the stained sections I used my favorite – General Finishes Java Gel.

I find it is very forgiving and easy to work with. I did one coat of stain and then wiped off the excess using an old cotton t-shirt.Once the stain had dried thoroughly I applied about 5 coats of General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Satin for added durability.   The Purple Painted Lady Java Gel Chairs Seats in a Row Anne French

I used a fine steel wool (grade 0000) in between each coat of sealer for a nice smooth finish. I like to use extra coats of sealer on seats and table tops since they will get lots of use.  (From The Purple Painted Lady- make sure to respect drying times between coats)Steel wool
Next, I started in on the painting portion. (I disassembled the table first, which made it much easier to work with since I knew I would be doing multiple steps).

FAUX ZINC FINISH (Random Brush Strokes):
To create the faux zinc finish I started off by applying two coats of Annie Sloan Graphite, using brush strokes in all different directions.   Remember that Graphite is a dark slate color with purple/blue undertones.  This is NOT a pure black.  Can you see the brush strokes in the image below?

COLOR WASH:
This created some really nice texture to “catch” the color wash. I did a color wash using Annie Sloan Paris Gray, using about five parts water to three parts Paris Gray.

Finally, I applied about 3 coats of the General Finishes High Performance Topcoat in Satin, fine sanding with the steel wool in between the coats. My client was thrilled with the finished product! I have since used this faux zinc finish on multiple other projects and it is always a winner.

PROJECT TIP FROM ANNE:
When applying a color wash, be careful not to use too much pressure when wiping off the excess as it can pull off some of the base color and potentially create an unwanted distressed look to your piece.
