This Is Who We Are…….

Thank you for being our customer! Truly- sincerely- I mean that! In this global world – where the internet provides endless choices- the fact that you are here at The Purple Painted Lady is huge!

I promote that we offer the best customer service in this industry. In fact- just read the post HERE to understand how I feel about customer service and my expectations on how we serve you. I believe strongly in customer service, but The Purple Painted Lady would not be what it is with out all the lovely ladies that are part of our team in Macedon, NY.

I am extremely grateful for them and they all possess unique skills and talents that compliment one another and when added up as a whole- make us pretty awesome. So, this post is dedicated to them! I will be adding more photos and bio’s this coming week, but for now………

THIS IS LAURA:   I would like to introduce you to Laura, our shipping & receiving manager at the shop and who has been part of our team for literally years. If you call to place an order over the phone- there is a very good chance, you will be talking with her. I am going to describe Laura as a petite dynamo! Both strong physically and in spirit! Bubbly and Laura is incredibly kind and compassionate. Laura has a grateful heart, and is always available to give a hug when I am having a nervous breakdown. Laura loves animals, art, and her plants…… I also think her favorite thing to eat is spaghetti and meatballs. But she especially loves her Shiba Inu named Juniper and likes to dress her up …..for example, here is Juniper sporting a Purple Painted Lady apron.   Laura is an incredible artist….like as in ….beyond amazing! Below are just some designs I have been able to snap a shot of. I find Laura to be very humble. She is always rooting for her friends, wants the best for all people and puts people and their emotional needs first. I feel very fortunate that she is part of our team! Thank you Laura for getting on my crazy train!!!

THIS IS AIMEE:  Let me introduce you to our Amazing Aimee, Curator Extraordinaire! If you have ever walked into The Purple Painted Lady and thought, “Wow! This is pretty.” It is all because of this chick! Aimee has the unique talent of taking a pile of random “stuff” and making it look like we intentionally purchased it to all go together. She inherited this superpower from her beautiful mama, Kim who is the blue dress in the photo below.   Aimee is also very well versed in Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and has painted a kitchen or two or twenty! Aimee is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet. She has a huge heart, cares deeply and is an avid blood donor with the Red Cross! I would want her blood since Aimee is a big time runner and I bet her blood is filled with superpower hemoglobin! LOL Aimee is a born nurturer and in my opinion, an incredible mom! She adores her family and enthusiastically – has always wanted to be a mom. Aimee is the type of person you want as a friend and I am lucky because not only is she one of my best friends, but I also get to work with her!  She is creative and always willing to try anything! Aimee knows all the best places to go out to and makes the best meatloaf you will ever have! Aimee wears many hats here…..procurement, merchandiser, customer support, painter and order packer. If you are part of the team here – you will quickly know- you wear many hats. Thanks again Aimee for taking that workshop at The Purple Painted Lady all those years ago and not running away when I approached you about joining my circus!!!!

THIS IS JESS! We’d love to introduce you to Jess who is part of the TPPL team! Jess is dynamic and plays a double agent role around here since she also amazingly manages our seasonal event barn called Fig Hollow Barn. Jess is an artist and did a pop up in front of our old shop. Trish liked her vibe so much that she pestered her to join our circus! Jess had a moment of weakness, and well, the rest is history! Jess is passionate on supporting a charity called Dear Jack Foundation which provides quality of life programs for adolescents and young adults with cancer. Jess sells items she makes under the name Love For Leukemia – which you can find on etsy. To date, Jess has raised almost $85,000. (a standing ovation is well deserved here!) Jess also loves her family and is an amazing mom. She will create these elaborate themed parties for her daughter Cali’s birthdays. (I mean, like in over the top details and decorating) In fact, I wish I had Jess for a mom decades ago! Jess is super into music, going to concerts, traveling and interior design. The photo of her with the dolphin was taken on a trip about a year ago, and I believe she said it was one of her favorite days alive! Her love for music clearly was inherited from her dad! Jess helps us here at the shop with packaging but …..we like to joke that Jess was born with this special chromosome that gives her exceptional organizational superpowers. She can walk into a space that is pure chaos and easily compartmentalize to make sense of it all. By the time she spins around, everything is bundled, toted, and placed in a space that is neat and easy to find. We always think she must be purging items but she is just a master at organizing! Jess is also, the operations and event manager at our beautiful 85 year old barn called Fig Hollow. Primarily we host weddings but in 2023, we will host some additional various events and a couple music concerts. Jess is impeccable with supporting the brides and grooms and managing the most finite details to make experiences there – absolutely perfect! Her event coordination skills are on pointe! She is extremely valued and appreciated!

Courtney and Britni.

Courtney is the high school graduate on the left, who can draw anything!  She is going to college and is passionate about sign language and will be an amazing interpretor.  Courtney always has a smile on her face and has been impressive in how quickly she learns our business processes.  She is typically the one doing custom painting projects and is our shop “tinker” – in that she can fix just about anything.  And on the off chance she cannot- her dad can!  Her mom, dad and brother are extremely cool people and if you have ever attended our annual September art festival- you will see the whole family there.  I am very – very fortunate to have her and would adopt her – if her mom and dad would allow me too!

Then….. I would also like to introduce you to Britni, who is on the right of the photo above.  Typically, if you see one of them…the other is not too far behind!  Britni s a full-time college student by day but the person who is typically managing The Purple Painted Lady’s email coorespondance by night!  She knows her stuff since she is one of my longest employed employees.   Because of Britni, I met Courtney and a few other key players who are part of our team and I am so grateful, that timid young high schooler who boldly walked into my shop….stayed with me and has grown to an amazingly strong woman!  Just a side note, that when Britni graduated, she did so at the top of her class! She rocked her grades and is extremely passionate about the arts. If you stop at the Macedon location….. you might run into her or have her as a workshop instructor since she is now certified through the Annie Sloan organization!

Anne ..who is featured in the photo below basically manages all of the details in our Greece location and is significan in the cool workshops at our Village Gate location for us.  Anne became addicted to Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan when she found 2 heavy wooden nightstands on the side of her road while walking her dog Stoli and carried them all the way home ANNE Semel Greece store 3200 The Purple Painted Ladyone at a time through a snowstorm. (no joke!)  She loves to save old furniture from thrift stores, garage sales, and the curb. As long as she does something creative every day, she is happy. Visit her in Greece or Village Gate on Saturdays and watch as she transforms some curb side item that was crying our for help into some marvelous piece that she resurrected.

Then we have Dianne. A very community focused friend, past Rotary president and a huge advocate for local volunteering in our community. I am fortunate to have her here! (Dianne is the cute one on the right)

Valentine's Day The purple Painted Lady RED

And here’s……….Luke in the photo below!  Otherwise known to some ….as “Luke the Duke.”  I met Luke because he stopped at my shop and asked if I would conder putting up on my store’s entrance door a poster promoting a play that he wrote, casted, produced and directed.  i was like, “what?!”  Who is this young twenty-something young man – who has the ability to all of that and where does he work currently?”

Anyway, I bought about 10 tickets and brought my husband Steve, Daughter Danni and a truckload of her girlfriends to the eprformance and we were all impressed!  It was that night I walked up to Luke and said, “you should really be working at The Purple Painted Lady!”  Well, the rest is history!  So, the photo below shows Luke getting ready to demo at our Village Gate shop.  Thanks Luke for not thinking I am crazy as I solicited you to work at the shop!!!

Next we have Sara who is below on the left …..Sara is amazingly enthusiastic and has a tremendous amount of energy!  She is typically at our main store in Macedon, but can also be found at our Village gate loacation.  Sara helps me have sanity!  She is in tune with all of our merchandise and floor inventory- so if you are looking for something inparticular- she will know which store it is and where it is located.  She’s spunky and has been a life saver to me!

So know that when you order from The Purple Painted Lady® – you help me …..support all of them! : )

How to Paint the Hinges or Hardware on Your Cabinets or Furniture

Painting the hinges or hardware on your cabinets or furniture? YES!

Sometimes- on a piece I do not want to remove the hinges or the hardware. I am either being lazy OR…the hardware is not super special and I want it to blend in with the piece versus stand out.

When it comes to painting hinges. I have done that many times- and more often- I am only painting the hinges BUT NOT the hardware.

The advantage of removing hardware versus painting it in place- is that it leaves the door open to easily change it out in the future! Once you paint over in place- it creates a paint seam that will be void of paint beneath. Also- it will be difficult to remove the hardware later if you change your mind about it.

As for painting the hinges though (and hardware) …. it holds up perfectly. Often- on kitchen cabinets- we will paint the hinges- as so to make them visually disappear. That way they are not screaming out, “hey, look at me – I am a hinge.” Who cares about hinges. It is the handles and knobs that we want to have fun with. This is is similar to choosing jewelry for your self- but in this case- it is going on the drawer or cabinet.
Louis Blue Old White Hutch base painted

The piece shown above is painted with Louis Blue & Old White Chalk Paint®.

The most important thing to understand when painting hinges- is to apply Chalk Paint® lightly. Basically – like you were “dry brushing” the paint on- and build up the paint slightly in a couple layers after the previous has dried.

When painting hinges, I open the doors too to expose the hinge in different angles- so I get complete coverage.

You do NOT want the paint to be applied thick or have it “caking” in the crevices of the hinge- because that is when it will chip off once dry.

Make sure to wax the hinges also using a rag that already has some residual wax on it from when the cabinet or furniture piece was waxed.

Not sure what it means to “dry brush?” Check out this link HERE.

Distressing Dark Chalk Paint® Colors- (turning white)

Don’t be afraid the first time you distress or sand Graphite (or any dark Chalk Paint® color) – it will start to look as though it is turning to a white.
Virgin Bourbon banner position better

That happens a little – BUT after you wipe off the dust and apply the wax- it all disappears and everything is the color it’s suppose to be.

This thought also applies to when you have multiple colors painted on a surface due to decorative painting. They may look as though they are smearing into one another- but again- blow off the dust and then wax. All will be fine.

And remember~if interested in purchasing Annie Sloan products, please visit our website if interested in ordering Chalk Paint®. We have Chalk Paint® available for $34.95 per quart every day, we offer low/flat rate shipping and it always ships same day (as long as Pete, our UPS guy has not come already!)
