Painting a Harlequin / Diamond Top Piece

One of the best parts of creating my business The Purple Painted Lady, is seeing the proud faces of customers who accomplished a furniture transformation using Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan and how they are excited to share their experience.

In western NY, the popularity of a harlequin, striped or diamond pattern is strong.  Some love a checkerboard too.  Either way- both require a little pre-thought, planning and layout.  I hope this post helps you if you are interested in trying a whimsical design.  Below are a few photos of some pieces I did years ago.

And here is a lay out shown by Karen Meadows.

Karen is an artist and lives in Maine. She wrote me the nicest email with some photos, and I thought I would share them with you regarding this piece she completed with a black and white harlequin top.

“HOW TO” INSTRUCTIONS FOR CREATING A HARLEQUIN TOP:

Karen used Graphite, Pure White and Provence on this piece.

She referenced our post with HERE that is all about HOW TO CREATE A DIAMOND PATTERN TOP.  It has detailed instructions on how to create this harlequin pattern also.

LETTER FROM KAREN:

I have recently turned my focus towards furniture and Annie Sloan paint and waxes from the Purple Painted Lady namely Trish!
The piece shown below was found in a garage sale. She said it was $20 and the challenge was on. Well… First challenge was to stuff said bureau into my beetle!

Karen Meadows pic

I cleaned it with a warm damp cloth. I fixed the drawer ‘ gliders and I was on my way. There is a picture when the Harlequin design penciled on and painters tape on the diamonds that I won’t paint. The easiest way I have found to paint a Harlequin design is to mark a large X from corners to corners. Then just draw lines parallel to those original lines, remembering the smaller the space between your parallel lines the smaller your diamonds. These diamonds are made with 3 inch spread.

Karen Meadows Harlequin The Purple Painted Lady 3 Layout grid pic

At this point I have already remove the drawers and apply two coats of old white to the entire Bureau. The diamonds are painted with Annie Sloan old white and graphite. There are two coats. I found a small flat angled brush works best.

On the side I use painters tape for the stripes. The teal color is the Annie Sloan Provence. I love it!

On the hardware I used my dry stencil brush with a tiny bit of old white. Thank you for looking. I hope you enjoyed it as much as the new owner of the piece. XO Karen

Color Mixing with Chalk Paint®

One of our Facebook friends, Suzi Mitchell wrote us saying she has the Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan colors of English Yellow and Louis Blue.

Sample Board The Purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint English YellowLouis Blue Sample - Copy

Suzi asked if mixing them could achieve Duck Egg.

Duck Egg Blue Sample Board Annie Sloan Chalk Paint The Purple Painted Lady

So, we did a little finger painting here for her. We did heavier on the Louis Blue…I am guessing maybe a 4:1 ratio and we achieved a color that is similar. It is definitely NOT an exact match…actually there more of a lighter blue hue to it….but yet, it is similar.

English Yellow Duck Egg Louis Blue Recipe The Purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint recipe

After creating this combination for Suzi, I thought I would write a brief post encouraging you all to not be afraid to dab the tip of your pinkie into some of your left over paint, and mix a couple to see the outcome.

You will enjoy doing this and possibly find, a whole new color to use on a new project.

Have you tried our Paint Mixing Tool on our website? CLICK HERE TO SEE IT!

It is a fun way to play with color mixing if unsure where to start. This tool is not an accurate, exact representation of an outcome- but mathematically it is pretty darn close. Note that your monitor quality does play into that equation. And just remember though- nothing compares to working with your local stockist and playing with real Chalk Paint®. With all that said…I hope you have fun using this Paint Mixer!

More Typography or Image Transfer FYI

I love inspirational quotes on pieces of furniture.  Especially, in a kid’s room or a front vestibule.  Making a statement seems, …cool to me.

The most recent quote I am painting is “Life Moves Pretty Fast. If you don’t stop & look around once in a while, you could miss it!”  Are you a “Ferris Bueller” fan- because if yes- you know this quote and you may want to – click here.

A couple weeks ago- I painted this “Love” dresser.  The shot below shows it almost dine.  There was still a little bit of painting left on it…..

Typography LOVE quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

When it comes to typography on painted pieces, it is very popular!

The dresser below is still in the works.  First we painted the dresser with Graphite Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.  Graphite is reminiscent of Gun Metal.  It is a soft charcoal black – which I like to compare to a dark slate color or a vintage slate chalk board in an old school room! It is made with purplish blues, browns, and it is not completely black.

Graphite is a popular color, especially when I am detailing a piece with vintage typography. I receive a lot of emails about this color. But again– I want to clearly state again though – this is NOT black.

The Purple Painted Lady Graphite Chalk Paint open lid

Once my dresser was painted and dried- I then followed the steps I have noted in another post here on my website.  So, in case you are interested in trying this yourself- check out an old post I wrote called “Typography! How does she do it?”

CLICK HERE TO READ THE POST ON STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS

The main thing is that Chalk Paint® is ideal for this technique.

As you will read- I like to use a projector and push an image up on to my dresser.

Using a water color pencil in the color I plan on using to fill in the design- I copy the design onto my piece.

Typography Life Moves Fast quote The purple Painted Lady Chalk Paint annie sloan dresser

In the photo I have here- I used a white water color pencil.

I will typically take the drawers out to paint the design, and then- using sandpaper- I distress my painted letters.

This will create a super smooth finish. Note the white dust on the Graphite paint on the upper drawers from sanding over the white letters.

Do not worry about that because once I go over this with my Annie Sloan Clear Wax- the residual dust will disappear.

Stay tuned and we will post soon showing the results using Annie’s Clear Wax over this piece.

We Painted a Patio Umbrella with Chalk Paint®

Yes- we all know that Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan is some amazing, crazy paint.   It started out just in England- and then it came to North America around 2010-ish….and now it is in United Arab Emirates, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, all of Europe, etc   Social media and customers who use it, love it and post about it and that …..created this phenominal global paint revolution.

Ok, sorry- I was thinking about that and had to share my thought.  So, The Purple Painted Lady is located in western NY.  (just need to say also- that if you do not have a local stockist then …..purchase from us……we ship your on-line orders out the same day that you place them and paint sold in the USA, is made in the USA!  Kansas City, Missouri in fact!)

Here is the story of the painted umbrella: I have a friend who had a patio umbrella that structurally was in great shape.  The fabric of the umbrella was a dull unter green- and not quite going with the new “brighter spring green” cushions she loved and bought for her patio chairs.  One day- when the “Mr. Purple Painted Lady” was at their home- she told him about the umbrella.  It was Steve who suggested, “let’s paint it!”

So, at The Purple Painted Lady~  we are fortunate that a couple of the women who are part of our team – were very enthusiastic about painting this umbrella as an experiement to see how it goes and how it holds up once done and placed back outside.

Intro to Courtney (on the left) and Britni! (aren’t they beautiful!)

Courtney Britni Patio Umbrella The Purple Painted ladySeriously- I struck the lottery having these two walk into my shop to be hired a couple years back.  Granted, they didn’t come in together- because Britni referred Courtney- (thank you Britni!)  …but I can honestly share- that they are two of the most mature and grounded high schoolers (and now…college students) I have ever met!  They are both enthusiastic, disciplined in working significant hours and still maintaining top of the class grades, and I have never had to call them once for missing work or coming in late!  (well, okay- I did have to call Courtney the first week she was hired- but that was only because I did a terrible time communicating her schedule)   They are both go getter’s and are always eager to do anything and to help and with a big smile on their face. (okay- I just needed to share that because I am very grateful for them and am feeling a bit meloncholy since they are spreading their wings and leaving for college.  I am not even their mom , but I cry as I write that.  Tissue please!)

Now- on to Chalk Paint®  and focusing on this project.

MATERIALS USED:

2 quarts of Primer Red (ctually less than 2 quarts- but it was more than one!)

2 quart plastic bucket

Annie Sloan’s SMALL paint brush (ps – I love the small size.  I find that the brush gets a bit too heavy in my hand wihen the brisles are loaded with paint on the medium or large)

Spray Bottle

The hunter green umbrella is big.  It has a solid wood base and the arms that extend out – are these non-bendable metal.  The umbrella is made of some sort of water proof-ish thicker canvas-like fabric that almost looks like it has a basket weave texture to it and can be removed from the top.

The Purple Painted Lady Courtney Patio Umbrella Chalk Paint Primer Red

We did not measure the diameter when we had the umbrella, but I am guessing it is 9 feet.

The color the umbrella fabric was going to be painted was Primer Red by Annie Sloan.

Primer Red The Purple Painted Lady

This image shows Primer Red with both clear wax and (on the right) dark wax over it. (no wax was used during this project)Primer Red Sample Board

Britni and Courtney started this project by laying the umbrella fabric out onto a plastic drop coth.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process Courtney

Then they spritzed the fabric with water.  We used a spray bottle like this:

The Purple Painted Lady Spray Bottle Paint Fabric Chalk Paint

They poured some paint into a bucket and dilluted it with water.  Almost a 1:1 ratio.  Then, using Annie Sloan’s small “domed top” brush they began to paint.  Ths brush is awesome in helping to get the paint into grooves of the fabric’s texture.

The Purple Painted Lady small Annie sloan Chalk Paint brush domed top

The best way to apply the paint, is using your Annie Sloan domed top paint brush:

1. Work in sections and paint from the center, out.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process 2

2. Swirl your brush initially in circles, using the bristles to get into all of the textured grooves.

3. Immediately, after getting nice coverage with circular strokes – lay your paint smoothly in linear, straight lines going from the top center to the bottom.  Watch a video here about “laying your paint.”  Hopefully the iage below conveys linear finished strokes.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process

This project took a good three coats.

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red In Process on loading dock

Courtney and Britni painted BOTH the top of the umbrella and flipped it over and did the underside.

AMOUNT OF PAINT USED:

They used a quart and a half of paint on this project.

We left the umbrella on our loading dock for about a week to allow the paint to fully set and cure before exposing it to the night dew and rain.  It is now back at the Van Gorden’s home.  Pretty cool, huh? And it’s already been down poured on three times and all looks good!

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red after 2 close up

The Purple Painted Lady Patio Umbrella Primer Red after

Now- some are you wondering- what did we top coat it in?

PROTECTIVE TOP COAT?:

I painted my exterior porch floors with Chalk Paint® without a top sealer back in 2013 and they still look great. It really does work well outside.

Most canvas umbrellas are water resistent, but will eventually start to drip a little water through their fabric if they are in a continuous down pour.

I did not want to add a variable that could change the umbrella’s basic fuctionality- since the Chalk Paint® allows the moisture to breathe or escape. If I had sealed the umbrella’s fabric on top- it would trap the moisture beneath- and then I would be concerned about mold growing when the umbrella is closed tight. I am not sure if I communicated my thoughts clearly there, but in my opinion – this would be the best path. : )

AMAZING CHALK PAINT® APPLICATIONS:

Annie Sloan created her paint for furniture and walls.  But it is so amazing, we have pushed the envelope on what we use it for many times.

Since fabrics of umbrellas vary- always do a test spot.  We can guarantee across the board that this will be a success for your umbrella or patio cushions, but many have done their boat seats and outdoor pillows.

Modern Masters Give-A-Way (Transforming a Cement Floor in to a Patina’d Copper and Rusted Iron look)

The Purple Painted Lady is so excited about opening our 4th location in the city of Rochester, NY.  It will be located at 650 South Avenue- which is in the heart of South Wedge and we will open our doors later in August.

The Purple Painted Lady South Wedge Stye Chalk Paint Judy Bret 2015

We have literally gutted the space.

Here is a BEFORE photo of where we started: (take note to even the check out counter.  Below you will see what we have done with it to spruce it up.)

OKay- just a reminder – the image BELOW is a BEFORE PHOTO!

650 South Ave BEFORE restoration The Purple Painted Lady

We have since done the following to the space:

* tore out the tan leopard print carpet and replaced it with wood.

* pulled about 1,000 nails out of the wall and ceiling, patched the dry wall, and painted the walls a pretty silvery grey/blue. (I like how it compliments the ceilig!)

* put in all new electric and hung new chandeliers (actually, Brett- the buff guy standing next to Judy in the photo above did all of our electric.)

* installed a full prep sink and work counter and the bathroom has been gutted with a new vanity installed.

* and everything else has been scrubbed…multiple times over!

Phew!  It makes me tired just writing it all out. (which is kind of pathetic since I hired contractors or promised champagne and caviar to Judy to do most of this work for me. LOL!)

This week Judy will be transforming the concrete bathroom floor into something amazing using Modern Masters Inc. products!    The Modern Masters products we use will make the floor look like patina copper and rusted iron!

The Purple Painted Lady Modern Masters Copper Iron Rust Green Blue activator Hoity Toity Peacock

MATERIAL LIST TO CREATE A LOOK LIKE ABOVE:

Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer

Copper Reactive Metallic Paint

Iron Reactive Metallic Paint

MODERN MASTERS GREEN PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER

MODERN MASTERS BLUE PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER

Modern Masters Rust Activator

Modern Masters Permacoat Xtreme

Spray Bottles 12 ounce

You will also need:

Either a 2″ or 4″ roller with a tray

Chip Brush

Hydrogen Peroxide (just a tablespoon – amount depends on the size of your project)

Small plastic spray bottles to mist aging solutions or rust activator (we used travel size shampoo dispencers)

Papertowel/rags for clean up

Anyway- this effect is pretty cool stuff, huh?

Anything will be better than what the floor currently is.  See the image below.  (waah, waah, waah)  : (

Using the Iron Reactive Paint and Copper Metallic Paint– you can make virtually any surface look like patinad copper or rusted iron!

PREP WORK ON CONCRETE FLLOR:

So, Judy and Anne started the process of painting the bathroom concrete floor. First- since this location was rented prior- the floor needed a good cleaning.

Judy cleaning the floor The Purple Painted Lady Modern South

Judy is super fast when she is on a mission,  In fact- she was so excited to start this project- I could barely get a photo of her cleanig the floor.  Now keep in mind- she bartered a bottle of Dom Pérignon Champagne and caviar for doing this for me!

So, using Mineral Spirits and Krud Kutter and a bunch of sponges- the floor was santized!  A clean water rinse was done and then – the floor was left to dry thoroughly.   The Purple Painted Lady Krud Kutter

The Purple Painted Lady Mineral spirits

If there had been flaking paint from a previous project- all of that would have been removed.

Next- Judy used plain old Elmer’s Glue and created a beed across the door way to build up a slight little dam.  She let the glue dry and then – did a second beed. She did this because most of the products we will be using are VERY fluid- this will help keep them contained into the bathroom.

Modern Masters Copper Rust Iron Bathroom floor concrete Elmer glue DAM The Purple Painted Lady

Once the glue was totally dry- then Judy moved to Step 1 below.

STEP 1 – Use the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer:   Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer 4 oz The Purple Painted Lady

We have the gallon size of the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer that had been sitting for a while so we needed to mix it really well until all the thicker components at the bottom got stirred in. (see image below) This “Acid Blocking Primer” is very importantbecause it creates a base or barrier for the all of the other products to sit on top of.  It also gives either the Copper Metallic Paint or the Iron Reactive paint something to grip to, depending on what it is you are doing and the type of surface it is.  Since most of you would be using a 16 ounce or 4 ounce container of the Acid Blocking Primer, just check the plastic container by hand.  It is doubtful you will have as much sitting on the bottom as we did with the gallon sized packaging.

Modern Masters Metal Effects Primer sludge open quart The Purple Painted Lady south 650

APPLICATION OF ACID BLOCKING PRIMER:

Judy then poured the Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer into the small roller pan that came with the roller.  Using the roller she applied two uniform.   coats of the  Modern Masters Metal Effects Acid Blocking Primer.  Make sure the first coat is thoroughly dry before applying a second.  In the hard to reach places- she used a chip brush.

Modern Masters Acid Blocking Primer The Purple Painted Lady

For this product to work well, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO LAY THE SURFACE FLAT.  Since we were doing a floor- this did not apply to us. But FYI for most of the looks of these products because we are dealing with fluids, if you do not lay the section you are applying the products to, you will end up with an effect that looks “runny” vs the images we show here.  So, lay a hutch down on it’s back.  OR, flip a dresser over onto its side.  You have creative options to make this work.

STEP 2 – Use the Modern Masters Metal Effects Copper Reactive Metallic Paint:

WE DID 2 COATS

Pour some of your Modern Masters Metal Effects Copper Reactive Metallic Paint into the tray of your roller.  Be careful to only pour a small amount at a time.  You do not want to be pouring left over copper paint from the tray back into the original container and risk contamidating the remainder.  This stuff is a bit pricey, so don’t waste any of it.  Have Syran Wrap available to cover your tray in-between coats.

Judy rolled a layer of the copper paint onto the floor and let it dry.  Once dry- she applied a second coat.

** What is important to know – is that you apply the Patina Aging Soltions over the Copper paint when it is wet.  So, since we we do two coats.  Let the first  coat thoroughly dry- then after the second coat- you immedaitely apply the Patina Aging Solutions.

While the first coat of copper was drying…  Judy poured the MODERN MASTERS GREEN PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER and MODERN MASTERS BLUE PATINA AGING SOLUTION FOR COPPER from their large containers into smaller spray / squirt bottles.
While the copper was drying, they poured the green and blue patina into 2 clearly marked spray bottles and 2 of the small travel-sized containers. They also poured rust activator into a spray bottle and hydrogen peroxide into a travel-sized container.

The Purple Painted Lady 12 ounce spray bottle

Judy spooned the iron into a small container and mixed it with water.

Judy worked in manageable sections – approximately 12-18 inches, working her way from the far back corner – around the vanity — to the exit door.

It takes a while for the copper to dry, so don’t paint yourself into a corner.

She started this series of steps by painting a second layer of copper paint.

Remember, the copper paint needs to be wet for the activators to work.
The Purple Painted Lady Modern Masters Copper Rust Bathroom Floor

Judy sprayed or squeezed the green patina activator in random spots on the wet copper. While waiting for it to start to turn green, she flicked iron on the wet copper floor in a cohesive swirly line and then sprayed the rust activator on the iron.

When she could start to see green patina, she sprayed and squeezed the blue patina activator.

In some places she let the green and blue meet but in others kept them separate.

She also took care to leave some of the copper exposed in little spots.

She squeezed some of the hydrogen peroxide onto the blue patina activator to make it look lighter.

She created a dam with blue shop cloths where the activators started to run in sections that did not have wet copper since the floor they were working on wasn’t completely level.

If after doing this step of the project- you would like more of the copper aged, just paint over those small sections and re-apply the aging patina solution.
Initially our floor looked like it had a Cheetah pattern, so we went back over some spots to make it more uniform.

It takes a while for all the activators to do their magic and dry, so Judy and Anne cleaned up for the day.

Again- this information is directed to those who do NOT have a local stockist.  Because if you do – go and meet them, shop from them and build a relationship with them.  The guidance, information and knowledge they share with you – will be invaluable.  But, if you are in a location where there is no one selling paint products- and you must buy on-line- consider us.  With that said, visit www.anniesloan.com to find a stockist near you.

We are here to help you, our customers!  We want you to be successful!  And, just so you know, when you place an order with The Purple Painted Lady:

SOME OF THE REASONS WE THINK OUR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS THE BEST:

*  We sell Chalk Paint® for $34.95
*  If you order before 3 pm EASTERN TIME any day Monday thru Friday – we will ship out your package that SAME day.
*  We ship orders out every week day all over the US.
*  We offer the lowest flat rate UPS shipping cost so if you are one town away or 10 states away- the shipping cost is the same.
*  We have awesome follow up customer service, too! (don’t believe us?  Please read some of our 400 Facebook reviews.)

And- it is my paint sales that keep me in business and allow me to be here to help you.  (my shameless but honest plug)    Here is a link to our on-line shop=>   http://shop.thepurplepaintedlady.com/

: )  And I will be here to help you as you progress through your future project!  And if I do say so myself- we offer the BEST customer service that you will ever experience!

Lastly- if I was helpful to you- ….please consider leaving a positive review on my Facebook business page sharing your positive experience or thoughts about The Purple Painted Lady.  Here is a link to my Facebook page=>  http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Purple-Painted-Lady/291882785710    This really helps me!  (wink, wink!)
