Can you paint terracotta pots with Chalk Paint? Can you paint terracotta pots with Chalk Paint? Can you paint terracotta pots with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint?

Yes, Annie Sloan Chalk Paint works beautifully on terracotta pots! It sticks to almost anything.  I would recommend to allow it to cure a bit before putting it outside if you live in a wet climate.

Chalk Paint will also work on a metal mailbox, but personally- I would prime the mail box with a product called STYX.  I will also add that you will want to seal the Chalk Paint once all done with Annie’s Lacquer which is made for outside and has a UV protectant.

I do NOT recommend using Annie’s Lacquer over the terracotta pots though since the  terracotta is porous and is meant to allow moisture to pass through – basically breathe.  If you apply Lacquer over the terracotta pots it will trap the moisture and fail. Chalk Paint is porous and will allow the moisture to pass without harming the paint.

And now that we are on a roll regarding porous, breathable surfaces….Chalk Paint is an excellent paint for over plaster walls. Have you ever seen little bubbles form beneath Latex painted walls? That is because moistuire is coming through. Right or wrong – moisture causes the bubbles. Chalk Paint is breathable and that will not happen. Now, what and why you are having moisture issues is another topic and should be professionally addressed.
